I just sold another copy of John Taylor Gatto's The Underground History of American Education on Half.com today (5 more copies at $23.45).
Mr. Gatto is one of my all-time favorite authors. I devour everything he writes and had the blessing of hearing him speak at a local home school convention several years back. If you get the opportunity to see him, GO! You will not be disappointed.
John Taylor Gatto is the former New York State and New York City Teacher of the Year. After 30 years in the public schools of New York, the man knows the system inside and out. But, where he stands out most stunningly is in his honesty about the tragedy of American public schools.
A dear friend first introduced me to this particular work of Gatto's when we were still a little new to the home school journey. But, I had read a re-print of his "The Six-Lesson Schoolteacher" when we were brand new to the idea. Though I was already convinced I wanted to educate our children at home, this book solidified my convictions about it and opened my eyes to a whole lot more than just education. From this volume, I also discovered how the movers and shakers of society move and shake society to conform it to their ideals. It is both sobering and a tad bit scary. But, the truth is always that way, I suppose.
From the back cover:
The Underground History of American Education will take you on a journey into the background, philosophy, psychology, politics, and purposes of compulsion schooling. The most important book about schools you will ever read. It will open your eyes.
I couldn't have said it better myself.
Again, I have five brand-new copies of this book for sale on Half.com for $23.45. That's probably the cheapest you're going to find online. The shipping isn't too bad either.
