Book Review: What He Must Be
What He Must Be:
...If He Wants to Marry My Daughter
by Voddie Baucham Jr.
I love this book! I enjoy just about anything from renowned author and speaker, Voddie Baucham. But, this one is a definite keeper.
Although it is written primarily for fathers, there is much to be gleaned also by mothers as assistants to fathers in the screening of potential mates for their daughters. I would highly recommend this book to the young women as well, since both parents and their children must be on the same page when it comes to the marriages of succeeding generations. Knowing where everyone stands on the issues covered in this volume ahead of time could save a lot of heartache later.
In Chapter 9, "Don't Send a Woman to Do a Man's Job," Mr. Baucham gives an example of what's wrong with the role of parents in modern dating today by setting up an absurd scenario. He tells of a man who gives the keys to his $354,000 Lamborghini Mucielago to the boy who comes to take his sixteen-year-old daughter on a date with the stern warning, "I want her back without as much as a scratch."
This is followed by the million-dollar question: "Who, you ask, would give the keys to a brand-new Lamborghini Mucielago to a sixteen-year-old young man? Well, I have a better question. Who would be foolish enough to think their daughter was worth less than any car? It should be unthinkable for us to turn our sixteen-year-old daughters over to this young man as it is to contemplate giving him a depreciating hunk of metal. However, we have come to prize sports cars much more highly than we do daughters these days."
Now, this is a man with his head on straight and his heart in the right place. I pray the Lord will raise up more men like Mr. Baucham as they catch the vision portrayed in this book.
This would make an excellent Father's Day gift. Perhaps you could give it early. :)
